About Event

The 16th IB2MAC will take place in Padova, Italy, on June 26-30 2016, hosted by the University of Padova. The conference will be held in the beautiful former Monastery of San Gaetano, in the very heart of the ancient city centre.

This conference continues the successful series started in Austin, Texas, in 1967. Since then, IB2MAC, which is held every four years, has become the most prestigious international event in the field of masonry.

In an ever-changing world in which innovations are rapidly implemented but soon surpassed, the challenge for masonry, the oldest and most traditional building material, is to demonstrate that it can meet the increasingly pressing requirements of quality of living, safety, and sustainability.

Italy and Padova, where the exceptional concentration of historic constructions raises the issue of re-using existing masonry buildings, and where research and practice in the development of novel masonry construction systems have been active for decades, are perfect locations in which to discuss and disseminate the latest advances in the use of this essential material.

The conference is intended to attract representatives among masonry researchers and practitioners, masonry industries and building management authorities, construction professionals and educators. The conference will thus represent a unique platform for discussion, networking, sharing new ideas and gaining insights into trends, innovations and challenges related to masonry, in both research and building practice.

The Place

Cultural Centre Altinate San Gaetano

The Cultural Centre Altinate / San Gaetano, situated in the heart of the historic city, has become a reference place in town, a place conceived with the intention of spreading culture in all its forms. It is a perfect venue for conferences, exhibitions, events and socialisation.
The Centre was established in 2008 after the renovation of the ex-Courthouse, which previously was a Theatine Monastery. The works for the monastery started in 1582, under the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi’s direction, and accomplished together with Saint Gaetano’s church. The monastery then became a Law Court in 1874. In 1920 the building was seriously harmed by fire and the following renovation shaped the new Courthouse, where judicial activity was fulfilled until 1995. Few years after, the works to build the current appearance of the centre started.
The Centre is a five-storeyed structure with a total floor area of 12,000 sqm. The basement includes the multi-purpose room (Auditorium), and also contains an archaeological site, started in summer 2005 and still ongoing. The ground floor features the expositive cloister and the Library Archives rooms. The area of the cloister (Agorà), previously occupied by the Hall of the Assizes, now demolished, has become a big covered square devoted to cultural events. The upper floors contain the exhibition galleries, the Civic Library and the office of the Mayor’s Cabinet.
